BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and then, two hours later, shot up a classroom building across campus Monday, killing 32 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman committed suicide, bringing the death toll to 33.
Students bitterly complained that there were no public-address announcements on campus after the first burst of gunfire. Many said the first word they received from the university was an e-mail more than two hours into the rampage around the time the gunman struck again.
Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said authorities believed that the shooting at the dorm was a domestic dispute and mistakenly thought the gunman had fled the campus.
"We had no reason to suspect any other incident was going to occur," he said.
He defended the university's handling of the tragedy, saying: "We can only make decisions based on the information you had on the time. You don't have hours to reflect on it."
Investigators offered no motive for the attack. The gunman's name was not immediately released, and it was not known if he was a student.
The shootings spread panic and confusion on campus. Witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire. SWAT team members with helmets, flak jackets and assault rifles swarmed over the campus. Students and faculty members carried out some of the wounded themselves, without waiting for ambulances to arrive. A student used his cell-phone camera to record the sound of shots echoing through the stone classroom building.
The massacre took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing at least two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building about a half-mile away, authorities said.
Two people were killed in a dormitory room, and 31 others were killed in the classroom building, including the gunman, police said.
"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," Steger said. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
Steger emphasized that the university closed off the dorm after the first attack and decided to rely on e-mail and other electronic means to notify members of the university, but with 11,000 people driving onto campus first thing in the morning, it was difficult to get the word out. He said that before the e-mail went out, the university began telephoning resident advisers in the dorms to notify them and sent people to knock on doors to spread the word.
Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum would not say how many weapons the gunman carried. But a law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was incomplete, said that the gunman had two pistols and multiple clips of ammunition.
Flinchum said that some doors in the classroom building had been chained shut from the inside.
Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of gunfire at the classroom building.
Some students bitterly questioned why the gunman was able to strike a second time.
"What happened today, this was ridiculous," student Jason Piatt told CNN. "While they send out that e-mail, 20 more people got killed."
Students and Laura Wedin, a student programs manager at Virginia Tech, said the first notification they got of the shootings came in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m., more than two hours after the first shooting.
The e-mail had few details. It read: "A shooting incident occurred at West Amber Johnston earlier this morning. Police are on the scene and are investigating." The message warned students to be cautious and contact police about anything suspicious.
Student Maurice Hiller said he went to a 9 a.m. class two buildings away from the engineering building, and no warnings were coming over the outdoor public address system on campus at the time.
Everett Good, junior, said of the lack of warning: "I'm trying to figure that out. Someone's head is definitely going to roll over that."
"We were kept in the dark a lot about exactly what was going on," said Andrew Capers Thompson, a 22-year-old graduate student from Walhalla, S.C.
At an evening news conference, the university president and police chief said they were still investigating whether the shootings at the dorm and the classroom building were related. But earlier in the day, the chief said he believed there was only one gunman, and he was dead.
Edmund Henneke, associate dean of engineering, said he was in the classroom building and he and colleagues had just read the e-mail advisory regarding the first shooting and were discussing it when he heard gunfire. He said moments later SWAT team members rushed them downstairs "but the doors were chained and padlocked from the inside." They left the building through a construction area that had not been locked.
Henneke said it is unfair to criticize the school over the delay in warning.
"People are absolutely making too much of that. You do what you can," Henneke said. "We have a huge campus. You have to close down a small town and you can't close down every way in or out."
At least 26 people were being treated at three area hospitals for gunshot wounds and other injuries, authorities said. Their exact conditions were not disclosed, but at least one was sent to a trauma center and six were in surgery, authorities said.
Up until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.
The massacre Monday took place almost eight years to the day after the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo. On April 20, 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.
Previously, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history was a rampage that took place in 1966 at the University of Texas at Austin, where Charles Whitman climbed the clock tower and opened fire with a rifle from the 28th-floor observation deck. He killed 16 people before he was shot to death by police.
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia, about 160 miles west of Richmond. With more than 25,000 full-time students, it has the state's largest full-time student population. The school is best known for its engineering school and its powerhouse Hokies football team.
The rampage took place on a brisk spring day, with snow flurries swirling around the campus. The campus is centered around the Drill Field, a grassy field where military cadets who now represent a fraction of the student body practice. The dorm and the classroom building are on opposites sides of the Drill Field.
A gasp could be heard at a campus news conference early in the day when the police chief announced that at least 20 people had been killed. Previously, only one person was thought to have been killed.
A White House spokesman said President Bush was horrified by the rampage and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia. "The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," spokeswoman Dana Perino said
After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed, and classes were canceled through Tuesday. The university set up a meeting place for families to reunite with their children. It also made counselors available and planned an assembly for Tuesday at the basketball arena.
After the shooting began, students were told to stay inside away from the windows.
Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the fourth floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.
Police said there had been bomb threats on campus over the past two weeks by authorities but said they have not determined a link to the shootings.
It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.
Last August, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus. The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.
I am surprised that it doesn't happen more often, especially so in the work place. The way employers have no consideration for employees and what an employee does for the employer... yep there is a place or two that I wouldn't mind shooting up if I were a real wack job, and not just playing one on the internet!
Even if they took away guns ... it's still going to happen ....
True; its not the guns that are the problem. It's the lack of sufficient care for the mentally ill. I have been too busy to read anything about the student who did this.....only a headline that someone suggested he get help. But...just how much can others do?
Its a sad, sad, crazy world we live in.
Stay safe, ya'll.

They are not always mentally ill .... Max Bear once said ( Jethro ) that after trying to set himself up in business, He could understand why people would put a gun to their head and pull the trigger.
When good hard working people have the rug pulled out from under them for no fault of their own .... shit happens ..... Our government is the number one culprit of this .....
I'm waiting now for the trucker that looses every thing to a Mexican driver to show up in the news .... I'm thinking it won't be long ....
Not only is that the end of a Dick Simon Truck, it was the end of Dick Simon Trucking.
For those of you who never heard the story, on January 18, 2001, The slamming, at 70 mph, of an 18 wheel truck into the California State Capitol on was an act of political terrorism. The kamikaze action by 37 year old Michael Bowers against the state government was a result of, according to Bowers' mother, the California corrupt penal system's ill treatment of her son.
This guy at V.Tech didnt just lose his mind one day after years of government screw ups. He had a mental illness. If he was just sick of the world and all it did not offer him, he would have just killed himself, but he didnt.
He was a disturbed soul ...but nobody could do anything about it. Who knows if they ever find out what set him off.....if he was planning it or if it was just an idea he had one morning, "Hey, I am sick off all these stuck up wastes of life..where is my Glock?"
Hopefully, this mass murder wont set off the copy-cats and get them all excited enough to cause their own uproar on their campus or workplace.

Well, Cho was mentally Ill. We are not talking about your average hard working American who had his job taken away by an immigrant. We are talking about a college student who was mentally disturbed who would have found another way of killling people had he not purchased a gun. He was on a mission.....guns, chains and rage. The government had nothing to do with this one even though the democrats will find a way to blame President Bush for this. Give it til this afternoon.
As a society, are we so cold and disillusioned by the acts of our government that we actually sit and point fingers and say, "Told ya so" even when so many people have suffered due to one sick individual's life issues that has nothin to do with the government.
At this point, the only people I blame for this are his parents for not doing their job and realizing that they had one child who needed some help......we have not gotten a complete history of this guys life.....only that 2 of his siblings are successful and his parents are quiet business owners. He may have been exhibiting violent behavior for decades and cultural differences may have kept his parents from acting. who knows. Many parents, no matter what ethic or national background ignore warning signs their children exhibit and then Columbine and V.Tech happen. They actually may have been clueless......I dont see how.
Yes, you bothered me......look, I am just out of bed, no coffee, my hands are freaking swollen for some reasons....llok like poofy baby hands.

Its a full-time job trying to get people to change. Oh, what a perfect world it would beif only other people would do what we want!
A plaque in our family room may hold the key to the secret of change. Its in Dutch, but translated it reads:
Change the World Begin With Yourself
Not what most of us want to hear!
Jesus told a parable about the problem of not seeing our own faults. He said, How can you say to your brother, Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye, when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye (Luke 6:42).
Being able to see other peoples faults easily without ever noticing my own is not just an indication of hypocrisy. It can be a wake-up call that the problem in a struggling relationship may be me. Perhaps its my attitude that needs to change. Or Im the one who needs to apologize. Maybe Im the person who needs a humble spirit.
Its a lesson some of us have to learn over and over. We cant change others, but with Gods help we can change our own behavior. And when our attitude changes, it may seem as if others have changed as well. Cindy Hess Kasper
To change can be a wonderful prospect, Though often its met with resistance; The transformation begins within us And will take a lot of persistence. Hess
When God works a change in us He can change others through us.
Your right Moldy ... It don't sound like government got to this guy ..... The point was bad things happen to good people and they crack .... some times ...
I got a chance to watch his room mates in an interview .... They said he was quite, with drawn and rarely ever spoke to people .....
I know this is college, But I remember back in high school how kids like this were treated .... I wonder if maybe there was some bullying going on and he decided to fight back ....

Maybe....I was friends with people like him.....the real smart kids who are quiet because if they spoke, they are laughed at or made fun of. I am/was always defending the underdog. I was made fun of, at times, but I am Moldy and ...well, ya'll know the rest. I dont take kindly to being made fun of, nor do I tolerate it when my friends are.
We cant blame anybody for this. There will be a lot of finger pointing and "you made him do this, but the real reason dies with him. Sure, mistakes may have been made and something may have prevented this from happening, but it will be a long time, if ever, until we find out why. All my quiet withdrawn friends turned out to be successful humans in this world. No gun rampages or Columbines. There is no excuse for this and as soon as we stop accepting the "I was an outcast...nobody loved me" excuse.... we may be able to do something to prevent this from happening. I am not so sure, though; this isnt the first time. I am a very compassionate and loving person and care deeply about others; even people I dont know. It breaks my heart when things like this happen. It is just wrong. All I can do is leave it in God's hands and pray about it...for the victims, for the killers family.
Again...stay safe.

NBC is saying that they have received a package mailed to them by the gun man ..... According to the news on channel 7
I read an article online about that...I am trying to be as nice as I can be, but its difficult. This is just another story about a social outcast who figured killing a bunch of people and then himself would solve his deep-rooted problems. Sure, he is not around to deal with any of the mess he caused. A textbook definition of a sociopath. WAH,WAH,WAH......I am just sick of it.
He even made reference to Eric and Dylan from Columbine. A little way to pass the buck. That was thought out, I am sure. Make then look like the role models he followed. I am surprised he wasnt wearing a trench coat.
Good grief...this will never end. Yeah, I feel sorry for people who are bullied and I got into a few fights defending some. I was fortunate that I was never the one being bullied. Guess I can't walk in their shoes and I should....that would be the nice thing to do. I am just tired of the same old "I was bullied into killing all these people" Just once, I want one of this sick freaks to say the truth,"I did it because I am a lunatic or I hate my parents and what better way to make them suffer or I just wanted to hurt someone." End of story.
So, how long until the first lawsuit is filed? Soon...now that the story about the package being mailed after the 1st shooting. They definatley need to come up with a system to alert students and staff of these shootings. I certainly hope this does not set off some copycats in other universities or schools. One wacko is usually the domino that sets off the rest. I guess I should just pray about that instead of being so angry...what will anger get me......besides a stomach ache?
I am so sick of this, ya'll..

End of story. I'm afraid we'll be waiting a long time if we ever expect lunatics to be aware and admit that they're lunatics.
I remember trying to convince one of my son's ex-girlfriends and her parents that she needed to be evaluated. It was like banging my head on a brick wall, and of course I was the bad guy and the crazy one. Fortunately her parents were willing to check her into a facility, and now she's doing fine on meds, but it doesn't always work out that way.
This guy obviously had mental health issues, not simply anger about how he was treated. The biggest frustration to me is, what do we do with these people? As long as they're able to function in the real world, and for the time being, refrain from crossing certain lines in behavior, how can we get them to accept treatment?
The extensive material sent to NBC News this week by Cho Seung-Hui includes an angry diatribe against the rich and numerous unspecified enemies. Among the statements:
You have vandalized my heart, raped my soul and torched my conscience. You thought it was one pathetic boys life you were extinguishing. Thanks to you, I die like Jesus Christ, to inspire generations of the weak and the defenseless people.
Do you know what it feels to be spit on your face and to have trash shoved down your throat? Do you know what it feels like to dig your own grave? Do you know what it feels like to have throat slashed from ear to ear? Do you know what it feels like to be torched alive? Do you know what it feels like to be humiliated and be impaled upon on a cross? And left to bleed to death for your amusement? You have never felt a single ounce of pain your whole life. Did you want to inject as much misery in our lives as you can just because you can?
You had everything you wanted. Your Mercedes wasnt enough, you brats. Your golden necklaces werent enough, you snobs. Your trust fund wasnt enough. Your vodka and Cognac werent enough. All your debaucheries werent enough. Those werent enough to fulfill your hedonistic needs. You had everything

WAH,WAH,WAH....sorry, but I do not feel sorry for him. I know I should, but give me a break; I was picked on by plenty of rich kids with awesome clothes and fancy cars..Did I care? Maybe a little.....but, I got over it.
I know..I know...there is more to the story than just a kids getting bullied , but this started with him long ago......deep rooted hatred of the rich and more than likely constant rejection from rich girls. Couple that with a mental illness and you have a massacre.
There is nothing we can do without getting the beloved gov't involved...once again.....they must stick their noses into what parents need to be doing. Teach your freaking kids to not be so mean...teach your outcast kids how to defend themselves without using a gun or a bomb. Crap...whatever happened to a little fist fight after school...I have a few scars from some of those and no regrets. People just need to pay attention to what is going on in their kids lives and stop expecting the schools to do everything.

I'm not saying you should feel sorry for him. How we feel is irrelevant. But if we keep focusing on his bitterness about being bullied, etc., we lose track of the issue of how genuine, bona fide mentally ill people can be directed to the help they need. Not only for them but for the safety of us all.
Bullying and rich kids is what he THINKS made him do what he did. But the mentally ill cannot be depended on to know why they do what they do, so we can't take their reasons at face value. Over and above it all, there was something wrong with his brain.
Sure, parents can teach coping skills, but the best thing these parents could have done was be awake to the signs that no matter what they did, without outside intervention, this kid was headed for disaster.
Edit - not to say I'm ignoring or don't respect your opinion about the parents and the rich kid issues and everything. Just expressing my feelings on this whole mental illness thing, which is such a disturbing fact of life.
