Stomach stapling, gastric bypass - I would never encourage anyone to have them. A former coworker of mine had one of those surgeries several years ago - she's six feet tall and prior to surgery weighed close to 400 lbs. Her surgery was sucessful, it's been almost 3 years and she's lost a tremendous amount of weight but is now saving money to have the extra skin removed or tucked, or whatever you do with it.
On the other hand, a friend of mine had surgery a year ago. She developed a severe infection and died 5 days after the surgery, she was in her mid thirties and left a husband and three small children behind.
The best way to lose weight (and keep it off) is through sensible eating and exercise (unless as Plush said, there are other circumstances that caused the weight gain). If you don't have the mindset to do that, even surgery won't effect a permanent change. Just my .02.

I've herd more bad stories then good ones with this stuff ..... I think I'll shy them away from it ....
It was very sad. She was such a good hearted person who touched many people, probably more than she ever realized. For her death to come as a direct result of that surgery was so senseless.
